My Handmade Journey: Getting my space ready

I have been working hard for the last two weeks to get my sewing space set up and ready. I did manage to get enough cleared out of the way to complete two sewing projects that were personal. I needed the outfits to wear to an interview and a lunch.

This morning, I sat down and started sorting through my posts and products to determine what may be missing or what I can create at the moment. I realized that my July 4th selection was limited (even though I swore I had more). My goal this coming week is to expand my holiday offering and start some back to school items for the Fall. I do have an idea for a Fall product line, but at this moment, trying to create something that big is not possible. I need adult and children items, so getting things completed quickly may not happen.

My best advice, when it comes to creating a product line in a handmade business is to plan it farther out. For example, I should be planning next Spring’s product line instead of Fall, because Fall is right around the corner. If you only add one or two pieces, you may not have that problem, but if your business is like mine, you will want to be creating farther out from the season or holiday that you want sell the product in.

I have several “holidays” coming up: Back to school, Labor Day, Halloween, and Christmas. I also need to be thinking ahead to next year. Sitting down with your calendar on certain days and planning ahead is a necessity. If you are going to grow your business and plan ahead for sales, it’s important that you think several months in advance. Plan it out and make a plan to get it accomplished.
