Business Management

Behind the Scenes

What does it look like to manage ten websites on a daily basis? Let me introduce you to my office space: a six foot table that shares thread, sewing supplies, a printer, a sewing machine, and my laptop. It is neither glamorous, nor is it what I want right now, but it is where I am in my business.

The goal is to be in my own home by April. I’m hoping by that time, my son will not need me as much. In fact, I’m looking forward to that point. I will be able to separate out much of my business machines, and then it won’t matter about what I work on. It’ll just matter when. I miss the days when I had certain days set aside for writing and certain days for sewing, and I even had certain days for recording videos.

I say this to let you know that as you begin your business journey, its going to be okay if your behind the scenes is not picture perfect. In fact, my organization has changed 4 times in the last 3 years. I’ve found better ways to store things. I found better ways to keep track of materials and stock. I found better ways to store my patterns. I found better ways to manage my time.

As you grow your business, you will begin to make notes of ways to do things better or be more productive. You will develop your own sense of organization. You will develop what helps your business over what doesn’t. Trust me, the first time you realize that something isn’t working, it won’t take you long to change it up. For instance, I had a small board that I hung orders on until I could work on them. It was great, but the folder I put them in were flimsy and didn’t last, so I bought something sturdier. That worked well until I had so many orders that the board fell off the wall, so I went with baskets. Believe me, you’ll know when you need to change it up.

The same thing works for any other business. I know that I write more efficiently in the morning when I first wake up. Afternoons are better for creating (designing, sewing, uploading new products, editing video, planning). On Saturdays, I write. I get up early in the morning, make a cup of coffee, and I write until I just can’t. Then I take a break and do a chore. Then back to writing or planning.

Make your workspace your own. Make your schedule your own. Create it in such a way that you can get things accomplished.

Remember, it’s okay to stop and change things up. Don’t keep doing what isn’t efficient for you. Instead, you should be working in such a way that you can create the best possible business you can.
