My Handmade Journey: Pursuing a physical space

One of the things that I have longed for since starting my business in 2019 is a physical retail space from which to sell what I make. I have sold at flea markets and community events, but I long to have a space where people can come and see what I make while feeling the quality and texture of the materials. It is one thing to see something online. It is another to walk into a shop and touch.

Last weekend, I went with my soon to be daughter-in-law to the local flea market to help with the grandbabies (four in total), and I took the time to peruse the competition (there is no real competition). This flea market is much different than the one I sold at before. How so? Well, this one is actually 75% bigger. Like, much bigger. In fact, the one I sold at before wouldn’t even begin to fill up 1/4th of the space of this one. This flea market has been around for a very long time, and it covers acres.

They have indoor and outdoor spaces, but they also offer warehouses and containers. I contacted them to find out if they had any container or warehouse space available. The flea market is only open on Saturdays and Sundays. This means that I would be able to make items to sell during the week in my home sewing studio, and then I would take them to my retail space at the flea market. I could also bring along my embroidery machine and heat press so that I could personalize right on the spot.

My goal for this year was to have a physical space from which to sell what I make. Selling at the flea market in a permanent space would be the best to meet that need. One, the cost wouldn’t create so much of an overhead. I would only need to sell one item to make my money back for the week and that could be done in person or online. Two, I could meet new clientele who may not find me online. I enjoy meeting people and talking about what I make. It brings me joy, especially when they later ask for a custom order.

Overall, I do hope that this is something that works out to my favor. If not, I may pursue another avenue of having a physical retail space for my business.
